Getting Started
How do I get started with tutoring?
Getting started is a short conversation. Schedule a free consultation, usually 20 to 30 minutes by phone or video, and we'll talk through what your student is working on, whether Roots of Reason is a good fit, and what a first month might look like. You can book online or call (408) 766-2399.
What ages and grades do you serve?
We work with students from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Our teaching adapts to each student's grade level and needs, from early foundational skills through middle and high school coursework.
Do you require a long-term commitment?
No long-term commitment is required! We offer flexible options including pay-as-you-go sessions and optional package deals for those who want to save. You can start with just a few sessions to see if we're a good fit, and adjust your schedule as needed.
Programs & Services
What subjects do you tutor?
We offer comprehensive tutoring in all core academic subjects including: Reading & Phonics, Writing & Grammar, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Homework Help. We also provide specialized support for test preparation, study skills, and executive function coaching.
What's the difference between one-on-one and small group sessions?
Most sessions run 45 to 60 minutes; guitar lessons run 30 to 45 minutes. One-on-one sessions provide completely personalized instruction with undivided attention, ideal for students who need intensive support or have specific learning challenges. Small group sessions (2-5 students) offer peer learning and are more cost-effective while still providing personalized attention. Both formats are effective - the choice depends on your child's learning style and needs.
Do you work with students who have learning differences?
Yes. Roots of Reason has experience supporting students with dyslexia, ADHD, and other learning differences, using multi-sensory teaching methods, and can coordinate with your child's IEP or 504 plan. During your consultation, please share any diagnoses or concerns so sessions can be planned appropriately.
Scheduling & Sessions
How often should my child have tutoring sessions?
Most students benefit from 1-2 sessions per week. This frequency provides consistent support while allowing time for practice between sessions. However, we can adjust based on your child's needs - some students do well with weekly sessions for maintenance, while others benefit from more intensive support during challenging units or test preparation.
What's your cancellation policy?
We require 24-hour notice for cancellations. Sessions cancelled with proper notice can be rescheduled at no charge. Last-minute cancellations (less than 24 hours) or no-shows are charged at the full session rate. We understand emergencies happen and handle these on a case-by-case basis.
Do you offer summer programs?
Yes! Our summer programs help prevent learning loss and can give students a head start on the upcoming school year. We offer both enrichment programs for students who want to get ahead and support programs for those who need to reinforce skills from the previous year.
What are your hours of operation?
We offer sessions Monday through Friday from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. During school breaks and summer, we have expanded daytime hours. Online sessions may be available outside these hours by special arrangement.
Pricing & Payment
How much does tutoring cost?
Our in-person tutoring rates are: $65 for 1 student, $80 for 2 students ($40 per student), $90 for 3 students ($30 per student), $100 for 4 students ($25 per student), and $100 for 5 students ($20 per student). All materials and resources are included in the session price.
Do you offer financial assistance?
Yes! We believe every child deserves quality education regardless of financial circumstances. We offer sliding scale pricing based on need and flexible payment plans. Please contact us to discuss options - all inquiries are kept strictly confidential.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept all major credit cards, debit cards, ACH bank transfers, and checks. Payment is due at the time of service unless you're on a pre-approved payment plan. For packages, payment is required upfront to secure the discounted rate.
Online Learning
How do online tutoring sessions work?
Our online sessions use Zoom with interactive whiteboards and screen sharing. Students can see their tutor, share their work, and collaborate in real-time. We provide technical support to ensure a smooth experience. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person and offer added convenience.
What technology do we need for online tutoring?
You'll need a computer or tablet with a camera and microphone, and a reliable internet connection. We recommend using a computer rather than a phone for the best experience. We'll send you easy setup instructions and can provide a tech check before your first session.
Are online sessions as effective as in-person?
Online tutoring can be just as effective as in-person when done right. Sessions use engaging digital tools built for online instruction, and many families prefer online for its convenience and flexibility. We're happy to discuss which format might work best for your child.
Progress & Results
How do you track my child's progress?
Progress notes are kept for every session, and parents get regular updates on skills mastered, areas of improvement, and next steps. Bigger-picture check-ins are scheduled whenever you want one - just ask.
How quickly will we see results?
Most families notice increased confidence and engagement within the first 2-3 weeks. Academic improvements typically become evident within 4-6 weeks of regular sessions. However, every child is unique, and factors like session frequency and practice at home affect the timeline.
Do you communicate with my child's teacher?
With your permission, we're happy to coordinate with your child's classroom teacher. This collaboration ensures our tutoring aligns with classroom goals and helps us better support your child's overall academic success.
What if my child isn't connecting with their tutor?
The relationship between student and teacher is crucial for success. That's what the free consultation is for: if Roots of Reason isn't the right fit, we'll say so honestly and point you toward options that are. We want every child to feel comfortable and excited about learning.
