Getting started is a short conversation. Schedule a free consultation, usually 20 to 30 minutes by phone or video, and we'll talk through what your student is working on, whether Roots of Reason is a good fit, and what a first month might look like. You can book online or call (408) 766-2399.

We work with students from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Our teaching adapts to each student's grade level and needs, from early foundational skills through middle and high school coursework.

No. Sessions are pay-as-you-go, with optional packages at a lower rate. Start with a few sessions and adjust the schedule as needed.

Reading and phonics, writing and grammar, math, science, social studies, and homework help. Also test preparation, study skills, and executive function coaching.

Standard tutoring sessions are 60 minutes. One-on-one sessions focus on one student; small groups bring together two to five students with compatible learning goals. Guitar lessons and combined programs have arrangements agreed during the consultation. We'll discuss which format fits the student and confirm the length and rate before starting.

Yes. Roots of Reason has experience supporting students with dyslexia, ADHD, and other learning differences, using multi-sensory teaching methods, and can coordinate with your child's IEP or 504 plan. During your consultation, please share any diagnoses or concerns so sessions can be planned appropriately.

Most students benefit from 1-2 sessions per week. This frequency provides consistent support while allowing time for practice between sessions. However, we can adjust based on your child's needs - some students do well with weekly sessions for maintenance, while others benefit from more intensive support during challenging units or test preparation.

We require 24-hour notice for cancellations. Sessions cancelled with proper notice can be rescheduled at no charge. Last-minute cancellations (less than 24 hours) or no-shows are charged at the full session rate. We understand emergencies happen and handle these on a case-by-case basis.

Yes. Summer sessions run for students who want to get ahead and for students reinforcing last year's skills. Daytime hours open up in summer.

We offer sessions Monday through Friday from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. During school breaks and summer, we have expanded daytime hours. Online sessions may be available outside these hours by special arrangement.

Standard one-on-one tutoring is $65 for 60 minutes. For a shared 60-minute session, the per-student rates are $40 for two students, $30 for three, $25 for four, and $20 for five. Guitar lessons and combined programs are quoted separately.

Yes. Sliding-scale pricing based on need, and payment plans. Ask, and the conversation stays private.

We accept all major credit cards, debit cards, ACH bank transfers, and checks. Payment is due at the time of service unless you're on a pre-approved payment plan. For packages, payment is required upfront to secure the discounted rate.

Our online sessions use Zoom with interactive whiteboards and screen sharing. Students can see their tutor, share their work, and collaborate in real-time. We help with setup before the first session.

You'll need a computer or tablet with a camera and microphone, and a reliable internet connection. We recommend using a computer rather than a phone for the best experience. We'll send you easy setup instructions and can provide a tech check before your first session.

For most students, yes. The sessions use a shared whiteboard and the same materials. Some younger students do better in person, and we will say so if we think that is the case.

Progress notes are kept for every session, and parents get regular updates on skills mastered, areas of improvement, and next steps. Bigger-picture check-ins are scheduled whenever you want one - just ask.

Progress depends on the student's starting point and the work involved. We look for specific changes in understanding and independence and discuss what still needs attention. There is no fixed timetable for every student.

With your permission, we're happy to coordinate with your child's classroom teacher. A short email thread with the teacher keeps tutoring aligned with what the class is doing.
