Our sessions look beneath the wrong answer, find the idea that never fully landed, and rebuild it so the next chapter, the next unit, and the next grade have something stable to stand on.
And yes, this includes ordinary tutoring: homework help, unit tests, this week's assignments. The deeper work happens alongside the work school already assigned, not instead of it.

Find the real gap. Usually years earlier than the topic on the report card.
Teach it at grade level. The missing foundation is built inside this year's work. No remedial detour, no worksheets from three grades ago.
Ask, don't tell. Questions carry the lesson, one step at a time, with the student doing the reasoning.
A 5th grader is struggling with multi-digit multiplication. On the paper: 512 × 21.
Points at the 5. "What number is that?"
Student"Five."
TutorWrites 500 × 2 = 10. "Is that correct?"
Student"No. Obviously not."
Tutor"Why not? If that is a five, and I multiply it by two, why wouldn't it make ten?"
Student"Because it's five hundred."
Tutor"Why? It looks like a 5 to me."

Watch, Trace, Rebuild, Return
Over weeks, the pattern shifts. Homework gets shorter because fewer problems require a restart. Tests stop feeling like ambushes. The student begins to notice their own thinking, catch their own errors, and try the next hard problem before asking for help.
Retrieval practice, pulling an idea back out of memory, builds stronger pathways than rereading or highlighting. Spacing the same idea across sessions outperforms cramming it into one. Varied examples let students see the underlying structure instead of the surface of one problem type. These are not study tricks; they are how the brain consolidates knowledge.
Roots of Reason was founded by Keith Reed, a California-credentialed educator with a degree in neuroscience and over six years teaching 4th and 5th grade math and science at a public charter school serving high-ELL, Title I populations. The methods here are the ones that worked with students who could not afford for school to be guesswork.
Sessions That Run Ahead of the Class

Yes, we do this, and not as an afterthought: before Roots of Reason, students working ahead made up the bulk of Keith's private tutoring. Sessions are built around three things:
Next year's units, now. The material school reaches in spring, or next fall, taught properly the first time.
Depth the class skips. Why a method works, where it breaks, and problems hard enough to be interesting.
Pace set by mastery. As fast as the student genuinely owns it, and no faster.
One Honest Check First
The first session still takes a quick look at foundations, because racing ahead on a thin floor is how strong students hit their first wall in high school. For most of these students the check is fast, and the answer is a clear runway.
From there the rhythm is simple: open next year's ideas early, go deeper than the class will, and connect the work back to school so the classroom stays easy on the day it catches up. You get plain-language notes on what was covered and where it leads next.
Subjects & Grades
Phonics, fluency, comprehension, composition, and essay structure, matched to where the reader actually is
Number sense through calculus, taught so each step has a reason a student can explain in their own words
